Here are just a few frequently asked questions from prospective parents and students:
What do you learn in Music Classes at LAAPA?
That question is often asked by prospective students. Our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals.
We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.
A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a fifty seven year old taking up piano for the 2nd time after having had lessons as a child.
The main reason to choose the Academy as your music lesson provider, is that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual.
If you enroll here for lessons, we will work with you to make a plan that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child.
What Styles of Music Do You Teach?
While many schools specialize in only one or two different styles of instruction, LAAPA works with instructors who are able to provide music and dance instruction in a variety of styles. Whether you are interested in learning Rock, Jazz, Pop, Country, Blues, Classical, Contemporary Christian, Broadway, and more, our university degreed teachers are ready to help!
What are the Credentials of Your Instructors?
Our primary mission at LAAPA since 1978 has remained the same - "To provide students of all ages with only the finest in arts education." In order to maintain the highest standard of excellence at the Academy, we therefore only hire instructors who are university trained professionals.
Unlike many area schools, we do not simply hire students or part time music enthusiasts/hobbyists. Our faculty of over 40 music and dance instructors are true professionals dedicated to their art and truly excited to pass on their years of experience to each student at LAAPA.
Our faculty members come to us from some of the finest Universities around the world including the Berklee College of Music, Julliard School of Music, Eastman School of Music, Florida State University, Loyola University of New Orleans, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, Ohio State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Tulane University, University of Denver, University of Miami, University of New Orleans, University of Northern Colorado, and the University of Southern Mississippi.
Piano Lessons (for ages five-adult)
Piano teachers at the Academy teach in many different styles from classical to jazz to popular music and beyond. Whether you want to learn Beethoven or Journey, our piano teachers are thrilled to get you started on the right track and help you achieve your goals. You'll learn the basics of sightreading, music theory, and piano technique and of course you'll also be able to work on your favorite songs within each lesson. When you're first getting started in piano lessons, it's not necessary to own a piano at home in order to get started. You can purchase a basic electronic keyboard with full sized keys that are touch sensitive for very little. This will suffice for the first six months of your lessons. For more information on choosing a digital piano to get started in piano lessons, watch the video below from the Academy Director.
Voice Lessons (for ages five-adult)
Our voice teachers at LAAPA enjoy teaching in a variety of styles. Whether you enjoy singing along to tunes in the car by artists like Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Adele or prefer the classics and/or broadway showtunes, our voice faculty are ready to help you build your vocal repertoire. Regardless of what style(s) you are interested in, the fundamentals of singing are the same. You'll learn proper breathing techniques, vocal warm ups, pitch recognition and retention, stage presence, how to work with accompanists, and more. As a singer, your voice is your instrument, so it is of the utmost importance to ensure that it is properly trained by professionals to avoid permanent damage such as vocal cord nodules. Our faculty at the Academy are very cautious in the type of vocal materials that are presented to our students...especially those ages 5-12 (as the young voice is still developing).
Guitar Lessons (for ages six-adult)
Our guitar teachers provide instruction in rock, pop, jazz, metal, country, folk, christian, blues, and classical guitar lessons on both acousitic and electric guitars. Students who are just getting started will be working on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading, and theory. Our guitar teachers are able to balance musicianship and fun by ensuring that during each lesson you are introduced to and challenged with a new musical concept but are also able to work on your favorite riff or song. Our guitar teachers use a variety of method books - and some instructors have even written their own! When you begin guitar lessons at the Academy, your teacher will meet with you to evaluate which method is right for you. Students are also encouraged to bring in songs via CD or iPod that you are interested in working on. Alll of our studios feature iPads as well, so you and your teacher can quickly search Youtube for examples of what you'd like to focus on. Watch this videos below to see some of our guitar teachers perform.
Dance Classes (ages walking-adult)
Our dance teachers work with students of all ages and with all goals in mind. Whether you have danced in the past and would like to resume or have never danced before, our faculty will welcome you and make you feel right at home! Ballet is most often the best place to get started since all of the other dance styles have ties to classical ballet in some form. Unlike many other dance schools in New Orleans, our dance classes are offered year round and throughout the summer - so you don't have to ever lose your groove! In addition to ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, creative movement, and parent and tot classes.
