What Sets our Music School Apart?

If you're brand new to music lessons and just starting to do some research online in hopes of locating the best music instructors here in Mandeville, we realize that it can possibly be overwhelming! Every music school or independent teacher tends to structure their approach to learning and presenting materials to students differently.

At the Mandeville School of Music & Dance, we have implemented what we believe to be an extremely well-rounded program in music education. Because we believe in providing students with a comprehensive learning experience, weekly private music lessons across a variety of instruments and genres are just the beginning!

What makes our school different is the amount of organizational detail, structure, and experience that we offer with over 40 + years in music education. Music is meant to bring people and communities together, and we have developed a strong community of music educators and administrative professionals who love creating unique, fun, engaging and holistic educational experiences for each student that comes through our doors! Our philosophy of teaching consists of balancing a fun and inspiring learning environment with goal-oriented weekly progress. This careful balance allows students at recital time (should they opt to participate) to have an amazing performance ready to share with their parents, family, and friends all while enjoying the learning process that builds up to this special event!

We have and continue to study how students learn and continuously adapt and upgrade our course offerings, teaching methods, faculty hiring procedures and facility resources to tailor the experience to the needs and interests of a wide range of student personalities and backgrounds. We have interviewed and/or employed hundreds of professional music educators during this time and have learned to quickly identify the most successful traits that are consistently found in the very best music instructors. We hold faculty meeting monthly as well as a large general meeting each summer so that all of our teachers can come together and share their successes and also ask their colleagues for help! We also provide our faculty with special seminars hosted by industry professionals based on their feedback and questions. All of this continuous training ensures that our students and parents are getting the very best experience!

In addition to learning from an amazingly talented, fun, and professional weekly private music instructor, students will make new friends through our complimentary music theory/composition classes and have the chance to learn from many of our other teachers during jam session nights or complimentary masterclasses and themed workshops (whose topics vary throughout the year). Recording studio time is included (1 hour free per student annually) enabling students to work directly with staff audio and video engineers to produce their first demo! Students also have access to our annual music festival (LAAPAFEST) for those who wish to have constructive feedback from a panel of professional judges. Multiple ensembles such as rock band, jazz band, theatre classes, and more are also available!

Of course we understand that many students may prefer to just attend once a week for their weekly private lessons. That's perfectly fine too as all of these extra opportunities are completely optional. Just keep these complimentary perks in mind for whenever you are ready to utilize them! Students who are able to take advantage of our comprehensive program will essentially put their learning into overdrive - greatly enhancing their knowledge of the fundamentals of music and rapidly growing in their skills and love for music!

Piano Lessons in Mandeville (beginning-advanced levels)

Piano lessons are a part of the original core curriculum of the Mandeville School of Music & Dance, so it should be no surprise that we have over 30 piano instructors on the faculty ready to help you learn to play your favorite songs! When learning to play the piano, choosing the most appropriate method is just as important as choosing the right instructor!

For younger students, we often recommend the Music For Little Mozart series. Our own LAAPA Press has also published a piano method for the young beginner called, "Piano Prodigy". For ages 6-up, we use and recommend a variety of methods including Alfred, Faber & Faber, Bastien, Thompson, etc. Our Mandeville campus offers piano lessons and keyboard lessons for ages 5-adult at all levels beginning - advanced.

While many music instructors prefer to teach only advanced piano students, our piano instructors are hired for their passion for teaching students of all backgrounds and abilities. Our piano faculty members are all hand picked by the School Director not only for their teaching credentials, but for their abilities to motivate and inspire students.

Voice Lessons in Mandeville (ages 5-adult)

Voice lessons at the Mandeville School of Music & Dance are taught by some of the finest vocal instructors on the Northshore with university degrees from nationally recognized schools of music from around the world.

When choosing a vocal instructor, it's extremely important to select someone who has a comprehensive knowledge of vocal pedagogy (which is the study of teaching students how to sing). In music news today, you'll often find current pop stars who have to cancel events or tours due to overextending their voice or developing vocal nodules due to improper voice techniques. Our vocal instructors are all trained to teach proper warmups, breathing techniques, diction, sight-singing, piano based music theory, and age appropriate literature. Our faculty are specialists in a variety of styles of voice including classical, jazz, broadway/musical theater, opera, rock, blues, and more.

While we do start private voice lessons at age 5, great care is taken to avoid over extending the young vocal cords. At age 5, students focus on learning to match pitch, ear training, and appropriate children's repertoire from Disney, Broadway, etc. Between ages 12-13, the lesson content begins to include additional technical etudes that properly exercise and nurture the matured vocal cords.

Guitar Lessons in Mandeville for students (ages 6-up)

Guitar lessons at the Mandeville School of Music & Dance are provided in a variety of styles and formats. As all students' needs are different, we don't have a one size fits all approach to teaching. A child who is beginning guitar lessons for the very first time will have a very different lesson than an experienced adult who is ready to take his/her playing to the next level.

At the Mandeville School of Music & Dance, we're also very open to tailoring the lessons to the interests of our students. Some students may want their guitar lessons to focus on learning to play chords and read lead sheets, others may want to be able to play and improvise lead solos that they've heard from their favorite bands, and still others may want to work on classical guitar preludes and other technical exercises or perhaps a mixture of all of the above! Whether you're interested in learning to play classical, jazz, blues, rock, christian, country, etc, our guitar instructors are ready to help! We teach students of all ages and offer beginning-advanced guitar lessons at our Mandeville campus. Our guitar teachers also offer lessons in banjo, ukulele, mandolin or even the mountain dulcimer!

Most young guitar students begin on an acoustic guitar as it takes time for finger strength to build. We accept students as young as age 6 in the guitar program and we can recommend excellent 1/2 and 3/4 size guitars as needed for smaller students. Getting an instrument that is the proper size for the student is of the utmost importance to ensure a positive first experience in guitar lessons!

Violin Lessons (as well as viola, cello, & doublebass lessons) in Mandeville (ages 4-up)

Violin lessons at the Mandeville School of Music & Dance begin as early as age 4. All of our violin instructors and string program teachers are able to work with students at such young ages through the Suzuki Violin method as well as Evelyn Avsharian's Songs for Little Players (and more) both of which provide a very basic approach to getting started in music notation. As our violin students age, our faculty are quick to incorporate traditional note reading and music theory as well.

For older students, whether you're interested in traditional fiddle music or classical violin sonatas, our violin faculty will help you to reach your goals. In addition to being excellent teachers, many of our violin teachers perform with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and other local orchestras. Parents of students under age 5 are encouraged (but not required) to participate in the lessons so that they can help them to practice at home.

Parents and students who are just getting started in violin lessons should know that violins are unique in their physical builds. They have a variety of available size options (almost as many as a pair of shoes!). This can sometimes make it confusing when trying to figure out the best violin size for you or your child. Before purchasing your instrument, we always encourage all new students to first stop by the school and have one of our violin instructors size them. If you are working with a local violin store, they can also make recommendations while you are shopping.

As with any musical instrument, violins come in at a variety of price points. You can learn a little more about what to look for in terms of quality and corresponding pricing guidelines on our main violin/string page (click the red button below). We are also more than happy to have one of our violin teachers offer his/her opinion(s) if you are trying to decide between a few different models.

Drum Lessons in Mandeville (ages 5-up)

Our drum lessons and percussion instruction at the Mandeville School of Music & Dance begin as early as age 5 and typically focus on just the snare drum at first. The reason for this is because the snare drum is at the heart of the drum kit and basic rhythms and rudiments must be introduced and mastered there before proceeding. That being said, it generally isn't very long before the diligent student is ready to move on to the full drum set.

At the Mandeville campus, we have both acoustic and high quality digital drum set with mesh heads for the best volume and technical controls. Our drum instructors are comfortable teaching in the styles of rock, jazz, pop, marching band, r&b, christian, country, and more.

In addition to the standard drum set, our percussion faculty are also comfortable teaching traditional marching band style drum techniques/fancy stick tricks, etc to prepare students for their school band drumlines. In fact, several of our drum teachers are current or former band directors at local schools such as Mandeville High School!

Regular Performance Opportunities

At Mandeville School of Music & Dance, all of our students have the option of performing in a variety of concerts. We realize that students enroll in lessons for different reasons and that not everyone is interested in performing on stage. For this reason all recitals are optional. That being said, we've had many students tell us going in that they were not interested in performing in our productions, and now (after giving it a try) we can't keep them off the stage!

All of our recitals are held in professional auditoriums and theatres using state of the art audio technology. Immediately after each Spring Recital, we hold an award ceremony to recognize the hard work of each student with various trophy and medal awards. We also hold an annual student festival (LAAPAFEST) with an Honor's/Faculty Recital following the festival.

Choose to Attend Online or In Person

Live Online or In-Studio Lessons and Classes

While many schools and studios around the world are playing catch up to begin offering distance and remote "virtual lessons" online for their students, LAAPA and the Mandeville School of Music & Dance have been teaching online since 2012!

No matter what program you may be interested in starting for the first time or (as in the case for our adult students many times - picking back up where they left off), our teachers have the technology in their studios to meet with you in person or remotely.

Need to attend online one week due to a last minute scheduling change or health concern? No problem! Will you primarily attend online like to attend occasionally in person while you're in town? Great, we'd love to see you in person whenever it's convenient for you!

If online learning is something you've been considering, it's important to compare apples to apples as the term "online lessons" means many different things. For example, there are now many companies promoting online lessons which are nothing more than a series of video tutorials and/or apps. Content like this is already freely available on YouTube and does not offer any personal interaction with a live instructor.

With online learning, be cautious and selective! It's pretty easy to find any number of random/out of state teachers and corporations marketing their online courses everywhere. Keep in mind, that they don't actually have a physical, local presence here on the Northshore, in Louisiana (or likely anywhere for that matter)! By taking online music or dance classes with us, you're supporting local Louisiana artists and musicians!

We encourage you to take a moment to take a virtual tour of our 4,000 sq ft facility if you haven't done so already or learn more about getting started in online lessons!

Student and Parent Success Stories

We're so thankful for Mandeville School of Music & Dance. We just moved to the area from California and wanted to sign our 3 yr old daughter up for dance classes to meet new friends and learn something new. Miss Desiree is absolutely wonderful. She made the class feel warm and inviting from the very beginning! The parent tot class is a wonderful balance of learning new skills and also allowing the children to be playful and expressive in their own unique way. We're so thankful for Miss Desiree and this program. Would highly recommend it to any families with young ones!

My daughter has been a student at Mandeville School of Music & Dance for 5 years under the care of Carolyn Russell. We feel so incredibly blessed to be part of the LAAPA Family. Carolyn, especially, is an amazing teacher and not only coaches, but leads our daughter as a mentor. Hailey absolutely loves attending class each week and looks up to Carolyn as a teacher & friend. Hailey has grown tremendously vocally & in confidence. We are so proud to be part of LAAPA!

Mr. Ben is such a great teacher! He's so patient with our son and everyone at Mandeville School of Music & Dance is so nice. Our son has sensory issues, as well as ADHD and we couldn't ask for a better drum teacher than him! It's easy to schedule and find the perfect program for your child.

Jeanne B. ~ Metairie, LA

My daughter was interested in piano but still nervous about starting lessons. The very first lesson that she took with Mr. Russell, she was immediately hooked. She was smiling and excited about learning piano! He is the best! At the end of each lesson, I get to see what she learned that day. She gets so excited to show me what she learned. I know these lessons will stay with her a lifetime. I'm so happy that she found something she loves and looks forward to.

Anne M. ~ New Orleans, LA

My son enjoys his class so much that he begs me to take him to Ms. Hannah's music class every day. She is not only patient but also passionate in teaching. She provides exposure to various musical instruments and styles to her students. We are very fortunate to have her as our music teacher!

Mandeville School of Music & Dance - Brief History

LAAPA first arrived in Mandeville in 1993 and taught music lessons in piano, voice, and guitar in a single room unit close to the Causeway. Shortly thereafter between 1994-2003, we relocated first to the Beau Rivage subdivision and then to the Beacham Place Shopping Center on Hwy 22 near Francos. It was also during this time that we added many other programs such as violin, cello, drums, brass, woodwinds, preschool music. From 2004-2017, the school was a staple of the Old Mandeville neighborhood on Girod St., just a few blocks from the lakefront on the northshore. Due to an aging building and continued growth, the academy directors began to search for a new location in 2015.

Drum Lessons in Mandeville, LA

In October 2017, the school finished construction of it's brand new, state of the art 4,000 square foot facility at 105 Campbell Ave #3 in Mandeville, LA. The new location was completely custom built and includes 10 private music lesson studios - all insulated for sound proofing, 2 music and dance performance halls for larger groups (with Steinway and Yamaha grand pianos), a 32 track recording studio, iPads in each studio, and more. All classrooms have viewing windows as well as closed circuit security cameras (with a large monitor in the lobby) for parent observations.

The current location is conveniently located in the center of Mandeville, just off of Highway 59 across from Fountainebleau High and Junior High. From I-12, take the Mandeville/Abita Springs exit onto Hwy 59. From Highway 59, look for the Campbell Business Park highway sign that says "Music and Dance Lessons" between Campbell Roofing and the 5 Minute Oil change.
