Practice Makes Perfect - Tips from your Favorite Teachers!

Dr. Jeff Copeland works with Music Theory students during the River Ridge School of Music & Dance's July Summer Camp

Kathleen Anderson, instructor of voice/piano - To make note learning fun, take an inexpensive cookie sheet, draw the staff with a permanent marker and use magnets as notes; lot’s of fun!

Russell Tucker, Associate Director & instructor of piano - When practicing a new song, look for all the measures that are the same and group them into sections. Then, practice each section until you know it, and put all the sections together.  It’s easier and you will learn faster, and of course, if it is a real difficult section, practice each hand alone first.

Josh Theriot, "LAAPA Teacher of the Year 2012" & instructor of guitar/piano/drums - Upon sitting down with your instrument to practice each day, play something unusual first.  By starting off with an exercise or phrase that you are not used to playing, you push yourself to learn new things and experiment.

The Hossain Family

Mandeville School of Music - Piano and Voice Lessons in Mandeville Louisiana

The Hossains are proud to be part of the LAAPA family.  Both daughters have been attending lessons since 2010.  Sarah (almost 9), enjoys playing the violin and piano.  She was part of LAAPA’s 2011-2012 String Ensemble and was thrilled to perform with her group at  LAAPA’s recitals throughout the year.  Sarah received a superior award at LAAPAFEST and performed at the Annual Honors Recital this year.  Sameen, age 7, loves taking piano lessons.  She also participated at LAAPAFEST and received a Superior award.

Sabrina and Mohammed, originally from Bangladesh, moved to the area to attend UNO for what they thought would be a two year’s stay.  “We fell in love with the city, the culture and the music.”  They have been living in the US for 14 years now and living in Mandeville since 2007.  LAAPA was highly recommended by friends, teachers, and peers alike.  They have been extremely pleased with all the teachers, staff, and music curriculum.  They feel the girls are developing a greater appreciation of music through the knowledge of their teachers!

Teacher Feature - Mr. Ben Hurst

Guitar Lessons New Orleans, River Ridge, Harahan, Kenner, Mandeville, Madisonville, Covington Louisiana at the Louisiana Academy of Performing Arts - featuring Mr. Ben Hurst, instructor of guitar

Ben Hurst has been playing guitar for the past 20 years, and has been teaching guitar since he was 16 years old. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 2005 with a degree in classical guitar. Since moving to the New Orleans area in 2006, he has been teaching at LAAPA and at the Choice International School of Performing Arts in Laplace, LA, where he also teaches guitar.

He plays numerous instruments and teaches them all: guitar, piano, drums, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, and ukulele. In addition to teaching, Ben likes to compose his own instrumental music on his guitar in the fingerstyle method of Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel.  While music is his passion, Ben also has numerous other endeavors. He has a passion for organic farming and raising livestock such as chickens, ducks, rabbits and goats. He likes all things natural and strives to live a sustainable lifestyle.

His latest project is building his own house out of recycled material and powering it with renewable energy systems such as solar panels. You can follow his blog documenting his progress on his tiny house at: smallhomebiglife.blogspot.com. In the near future, after finishing his house, he will focus on building the farm of his dreams and recording an album in his new home!

Get Involved!  Working with the Teacher...

It’s no secret!  Students make the most progress when parents and teachers are both involved.  Both must provide inspiration and encouragement.   Parents—take a few minutes each week to stop and check in with your child’s instructor to see what you can do to become more involved in your child’s performing arts education!

Welcome to Our Newest Students!

A HUGE WELCOME to the following new students who have recently joined us! We are so happy that you’ve chosen to study at LAAPA.  We know you will do great things this year!
