Looking Ahead to the New Year
Happy New Year! I don’t know about you, but I’m very much ready for things to get back in a regular groove now that the holidays are over. Lots of good times with family and friends for sure, but we’re looking forward to having our students and faculty back on campus to kick off another exciting year of music lessons and dance classes!
I wanted to take a moment to congratulate and thank all of our students, parents, faculty, and staff once again for 11 outstanding Christmas Concerts. From the planning and organization to the quality of the performances, I thought that they were some of our best performances yet. Three things especially struck me this year that I’d like to share:
1.) The incredible variety within the programs. In addition to the solo performances by our music students (piano, voice, violin, guitar, drums, bass, clarinet, flute, trumpet, and even glockenspeil!) we also had our preschool music classes perform and so many exciting duet, trio, quartet, and ensemble performances. Our dancers at the River Ridge School of Music & Dance were absolutely fantastic!
2.) So many of our students have been performing with us year after year. It’s easy for me to remember some of their first performances when they were brand new beginners and perhaps a little more nervous than they are today! I’m always excited to see and/or hear what they’ve been working on. Every year I see them perform, they continue to improve and gain self confidence. I can’t really think of anything more rewarding to me here at LAAPA than being able to watch our students grow in their skills and love of music and dance.
3.) This year you, the LAAPA Community, were so generous with donations to the Teresian Sisters and the Batesville Mission in Batesville, Texas. Not only did we fill 84 contractor bags full of gifts, but we also raised $2,500 in cash donations! When we dropped off the gifts and donations to the Teresian Sister’s main provincilate in Covington, LA, Sr. Dolores was astounded and so grateful.
Looking ahead at the new year, we’ve got some exciting things planned! Perhaps the most exciting thing is our brand new Covington School of Music location! The new location is only about 1 minute away from our current Covington location and has plenty parking, a large waiting area, six studios, and is much more accessible both from Collins and downtown Covington (from Lee Lane). We hope to be moved in sometime before February and we will be making an “official move-in date” public soon!
Our brand new website “laapa.com” is launching soon! Our entire site has been redesigned to better serve you.
Also, LAAPAFEST, our annual music festival will be here before you know it. More on that next edition!

If it has been awhile since you have last come inside our Mandeville and River Ridge campuses, then we would like to invite you in to take a look at the recently added artwork throughout our school.
Local artist, Michaela Howell has graciously decorated our schools with her music and dance themed artwork (just one example of which is pictured right). All of these pieces may be purchased for your home or as a gift! Please inquire at the front desk.
With down home country humble beginnings Michaela has always been very resourceful. She cuts, sands, primes, paints, and in some cases stains her abstract versions of the wooden instruments, creating very hands-on works of art. This resourcefulness has “Played” out very nicely in her most current work. Though the recycling of varying musical instrument components including guitar strings, violin knobs, music sheets featuring the instrument showcased, Michaela portrays a ‘current’ sense of style combined with a very vivid color pallet, creating a symphony for the senses!

“My son and I have been attending the preschool music program with Miss Meredith. She enjoys the children’s experience with music and is spontaneous in class. She is on the floor, dancing, singing and interacting with the children. They respond to that and have a great time learning rhythm and movement, musical instruments, discipline (sitting with their parents while the teacher distributes instruments) and patience (taking turns on the piano or drum set). Oh, the joy when my son claps to the beat of music the way they do it in class. I feel that there is so much more that Meredith does that I am not able to articulate. She is a great music teacher!”
