Spring Concerts & Award Ceremonies are Coming!

New Orleans, Metairie, Mandeville Piano and Guitar Lessons

Dear Students and Parents,

Our Spring Music Concerts, Dance Recitals, and Award Ceremonies will be held as follows:

June 17-18 at Fuhrmann Auditorium, 317 N. Jefferson St. in Covington for the Covington and Mandeville campuses.

June 25 at St. Martin’s Solomon Theatre 5309 Airline Dr. in Metairie (music students only) and June 26 at Loyola University - Roussel Hall - 6363 St. Charles Ave. (music and dance students) for the River Ridge campus.

Concert assignments will be announced in late May during rehearsals.

All students are asked to complete and return the participation forms online. Deadlines to sign up are 4/9/16 (for dance students) and 5/2/16 (for music students).

Sign-up online today at:
http://www.laapa.com/music-concert
http://www.laapa.com/dance-recital

RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR PARTICIPATION:

- All music students will be assigned one solo and may additionally participate in a duet or compose an original piece.

- All instrumental and vocal students (voice, guitar, strings, wind, brass, etc.) will require accompanists. The accompanist fee is $30 and will provide students with 3 mini-rehearsals with the accompanist (or their instructor within the lesson) in addition to the performance on the day of the concert.

- Mandatory rehearsals for music students provide the student with additional coaching from the Academy Faculty and will be held Saturdays at all campuses between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM on May 28, June 4, and June 11. Students must attend 2 of the 3 rehearsals. A more detailed schedule is forthcoming.

- All dance students that are not performing in the concert must inform the teacher immediately as an exact count of students performing will be necessary for the choreography.

- All dance students will purchase costumes through the school once they are assigned. Dance students must attend all lessons from now until the concert. If students miss more than three lessons from now until the concert they will not be able to perform. Rehearsal for dance students will be held the week before the recital. Dance students should come in full costume the week of June 20 for dress rehearsal held at The River Ridge School of Music and Dance. Finally, all dance students should arrive at Roussel Hall 60 minutes prior to their performance time to allow for stage blocking.

Trophies will be awarded at each program. Ask your individual instructor about our categories and how trophies are earned. Trophies and other awards will be awarded based on students’ weekly performance and effort at lessons with the exception of the Original Composition trophy and LAAPAFEST awards. Concert Tickets for General Admission may be pre-ordered when signing up online or at the Front Desk.

Two complimentary concert tickets (per family) are available for students and/or parents to pick up at the Front Desk.

I look forward to seeing everyone this June at our main event of the year!

Ryan Cullen, Director

Music & Dance Artwork - Now Available Online!

You can now browse and purchase the beautiful Music and Dance artwork of local artist Michaela Howell in the LAAPA Store. Just goto http://store.laapa.com/art/. She is currently offering 10% off, so be sure to take a look soon!
Local artist, Michaela Howell has graciously decorated our schools with her music and dance themed artwork (just one example of which is pictured right). All of these pieces may be purchased for your home or as a gift! Please inquire at the front desk.
With down home country humble beginnings Michaela has always been very resourceful. She cuts, sands, primes, paints, and in some cases stains her abstract versions of the wooden instruments, creating very hands-on works of art. This resourcefulness has “Played” out very nicely in her most current work. Though the recycling of varying musical instrument components including guitar strings, violin knobs, music sheets featuring the instrument showcased, Michaela portrays a ‘current’ sense of style combined with a very vivid color pallet, creating a symphony for the senses!

Student of the Month - Austin Freedman

New Orleans, Metairie, Mandeville Voice Lessons

Covington School of Music student, Austin Freedman takes guitar lessons here at LAAPA! We recently had a chance to speak with him and learn a little more about his lessons and interests!

Tell us about yourself and how long you’ve been taking guitar lessons.

I’m 17 and I’ve been taking lessons for over a year now. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 9, but got serious about it my freshman year, when I was 15 years old. I just love playing guitar and try to practice it as much as I can.

What do you enjoy about your guitar lessons?

I love the amount of personality that comes out of Josh, and the amount of fun we have in lessons. He’s really passionate about it and it matches my passion too.

What do you play in rock/pop ensemble?

I am the lead guitarist.

What else do you like to do and what are your future goals?

I also like to play video games. I work at a middle school as an afterschool volunteer. I want to go to college up north somewhere and study nuclear engineering or interior engineering, and also minor in music.

A HUGE welcome to our newest students who began lessons or added programs in March!

We are so happy that you’ve chosen to study at LAAPA.
We know you will do great things this year!

Student “Shout-Outs!”

New Orleans, Metairie, Mandeville Voice Lessons

“Music has always been a part of my life, and I just love that Kanako [my teacher] understands that I already have a lot of experience and treats me like an equal, sharing her own experiences and always offering criticism that is constructive.”

~Laurel Mills
