Getting the Most out of Your Lessons at LAAPA!

New Orleans, Metairie, Mandeville Piano and Guitar Lessons

March is here, and our Winter/Spring semester is in full swing! Students are putting their final touches on their LAAPAFEST pieces and are also beginning to think about their Spring Recital pieces! With so much going on (both here at LAAPA and your daily routine) it’s understandable that you may not be aware of everything that we have available for you here at LAAPA. So please take a moment to review the following so that you can make the most of your music lessons and dance classes here at the Academy!

LESSONMATE:

This past Fall, we launched the LessonMate digital assignment program for all music students. This March, it is currently being rolled out for all dance students as well! LessonMate allows teachers to send your weekly assignments and lesson progress reports via the web. Each time your teacher posts a new lesson, you will receive an email prompting you to login and view the lesson.

***IMPORTANT*** Because lessons many times contain digital audio files, video demonstrations, in addition to text, please note that there is no actual lesson content in the email itself - you must login with your email address and password. If you’ve forgotten your password, it’s very quick and easy to change it. Just click the “forgot password” link on the login page!

While many of our teachers are using LessonMate for each student, some teachers prefer to use the program on a student by student basis as some students and parents prefer traditional paper communications. If your teacher has not yet used LessonMate in your lessons and you’d like to try out the program, just ask and they would be happy to! If you are having trouble accessing your LessonMate account or need to change your email address on file, please let us know!

FREE MUSIC THEORY CLASSES:

Did you know that all music students are welcome to attend our free 45 minute weekly theory classes each week? We offer them at each campus and also offer a virtual class via Google Hangouts. For scheduling and class times, please give us a call or stop by the front desk!

SPRING RECITALS:

Our Spring Recitals & Awards Ceremony will be here before you know it. Dates and signup information will be announced in the April Newsletter. All students are invited to participate, but participation (as in all of our LAAPA Recitals) is not mandatory. In order to help our students prepare for the Spring Concert, we also hold 3 weeks of rehearsals prior to the concert dates. In this way, students can really fine tune their performances. This is especially beneficial for our brand new students who will perhaps be making their big debut on the stage!

Have a great March and see you soon!

Ryan Cullen, Academy Director

Music & Dance Artwork - Now Available Online!

You can now browse and purchase the beautiful Music and Dance artwork of local artist Michaela Howell in the LAAPA Store. Just goto http://store.laapa.com/art/. She is currently offering 10% off through the middle of January, so be sure to take a look soon!
Local artist, Michaela Howell has graciously decorated our schools with her music and dance themed artwork (just one example of which is pictured right). All of these pieces may be purchased for your home or as a gift! Please inquire at the front desk.
With down home country humble beginnings Michaela has always been very resourceful. She cuts, sands, primes, paints, and in some cases stains her abstract versions of the wooden instruments, creating very hands-on works of art. This resourcefulness has “Played” out very nicely in her most current work. Though the recycling of varying musical instrument components including guitar strings, violin knobs, music sheets featuring the instrument showcased, Michaela portrays a ‘current’ sense of style combined with a very vivid color pallet, creating a symphony for the senses!

Student of the Month - Jessiah Suazo

New Orleans, Metairie, Mandeville Voice Lessons

River Ridge School of Music & Dance student, Jessiah Suazo takes piano lessons and ballet classes here at LAAPA! We recently had a chance to speak with her and learn a little more about her lessons and interests!

Tell us about yourself and how long you’ve been taking piano and ballet lessons.

I’ve been taking both piano and ballet lessons at LAAPA since September. I study piano with Mr. Daniel and my ballet teacher is Ms. Mary. This past December was my first recital ever. I was a little scared and shy, but once I got on stage, it was awesome!

What do you enjoy about your piano lessons?

I love that I can move my fingers across the keys and make beautiful music. Some of the pieces I have worked on with Mr. Daniel include “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and Beethoven’s “Fur Elise”.

What do you do in ballet class?

In ballet class, we learn dance phrases. I love to move my body and stretch! I like the new move we’re working on in class with Ms. Mary; it’s called “jeté”, which means “to throw” in French.

What else do you like to do and what are your future goals?

I like to sing when I am alone and maybe someday I will take voice lessons too. I think I want to be a singer when I grow up. I also want to share that in five months, I will be a big sister!!!

A HUGE welcome to our newest students who began lessons or added programs in February!

We are so happy that you’ve chosen to study at LAAPA.
We know you will do great things this year!
