More than Music & Dance - Inspiring Success!

Dance Classes for kids, teens, and adults and guitar and ukulele lessons for all ages!

Last month our entire faculty and staff came together to meet at the LAAPA Performance Hall on the campus of the River Ridge School of Music & Dance to learn about what’s new at LAAPA this school year! Five of our faculty members pictured below shared what has been working well for their student. We wanted to share just a few highlights to demonstrate how committed our Faculty/Staff are to providing a truly unrivaled and first class music and dance education here in New Orleans.

Ryan Cullen, Academy Director, opened the meeting and shared what’s new with LAAPA this year!  His biggest announcement is currently still top secret at the moment, but we look forward to sharing it with all of you within the next few months!  Cullen also discussed the new Makeup Workshop program that is open to all private and group music students who may miss a lesson.  Each workshop is a 60 minute session and gives students the opportunity to focus on a variety of musical topics that may not always be included in their ordinary lessons due to time constraints.

Ms. Layla Sutton, Instructor of General Music presented, “Keeping up in the Digital Age” which discussed how today’s students are more digitally inclined which has a tremendous effect on how they are accustomed to learning new concepts.  Children of today have better motor skills and improved cognitive functions for example - perfect for music and dance lessons!

Ms. Maggie Probst, Instructor of Voice/Piano presented “10 Things I’ve Learned in 10 Years of Teaching” in which she discussed the importance of parental involvement to reach goals, always using positive speech, turning boring exercises into games, being aware that each student learns music differently, and more!

Ms. Tamara Murray, Instructor of Piano/Voice/Flute presented on the Talented Arts Program in St. Tammany Parish to inform our faculty of how to get students prepared and accepted into this popular school program.

Mrs. Bethany Crawford, Instructor of Piano/Voice presented, “More Than Music - Inspiring Success” which detailed how music lessons teach students to be more confident and successful as people! Highlights included:  teaching confidence, making mistakes gracefully,  and fostering a mindset of growth.

Finally, Mr. Bill Solomon, Instructor of Guitar, Bass, Percussion presented on “Student Retention” which discussed how he has been able to keep his students moving forward over a period of several years.  One of his key points was for teachers to always apply lessons to students’ favorite songs which he feels helps them to take ownership of their learning.  For his presentation this year, Bill was voted 2016 Teacher of the Year by his colleagues!

Congratulations to all Faculty and Staff members.  It is because of all you contribute to LAAPA that we continue to grow and achieve our mission of providing the very best music & dance education possible here in New Orleans.

Ryan Cullen, Academy Director

Music & Dance Artwork - Now Available Online!

You can now browse and purchase the beautiful Music and Dance artwork of local artist Michaela Howell in the LAAPA Store. Just goto http://store.laapa.com/art/. She is currently offering 10% off, so be sure to take a look soon!
Local artist, Michaela Howell has graciously decorated our schools with her music and dance themed artwork (just one example of which is pictured right). All of these pieces may be purchased for your home or as a gift! Please inquire at the front desk.
With down home country humble beginnings Michaela has always been very resourceful. She cuts, sands, primes, paints, and in some cases stains her abstract versions of the wooden instruments, creating very hands-on works of art. This resourcefulness has “Played” out very nicely in her most current work. Though the recycling of varying musical instrument components including guitar strings, violin knobs, music sheets featuring the instrument showcased, Michaela portrays a ‘current’ sense of style combined with a very vivid color pallet, creating a symphony for the senses!

Students of the Month - Sam and Jay Quinn

New Orleans, Metairie, Mandeville Voice Lessons

River Ridge School of Music & Dance students, Sam & Jay Quinn takepiano lessons here at LAAPA!  We recently had a chance to speak with them and learn a little more about their lessons and interests!

Tell us about your teacher and lessons!

Sam - “Ms. Meghan is my teacher and I’m currently working on Beethoven’s Sonata No. 14 in C# Minor “Quasi una fantasia”, Op. 27, No. 2, AKA “Moonlight Sonata.  Ms. Meghan is cool and lets me pick what I want to do. She provides me with good choices.  I take piano lessons because I enjoy doing new things and I like how piano feels and sounds. I always have.  It feels like a release when I play.”

Jay - “Ms. Meghan is also my teacher and I’m currently working on “The Man from Mars.  Ms. Meghan is nice. She teaches me a lot of songs.  If I mess up, she helps me.  When she is proud of me, she gives me a sticker.  I take piano because I like to. My mom picked piano for me.  It means a lot as much as my mom means to me.”

Nina (mom) - Meghan is the bees knees. She is kind, encouraging, loving, funny, and I couldn’t ask for more in a person who spends time with my children.

What are your other interests/hobbies?

Sam – “I play football at Jesuit High School (position Free Safety on the Freshman team.  I also enjoy Motor Cross.”

Jay – “I like catching lizards in my back yard and putting them in a bug box so I can observe them; I also like catching Monarch Caterpillars”

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Sam - “I’d like to be a professional Motor Cross Racer.”
Jay - “I want to be a Policeman.”

A HUGE welcome to our newest students who began lessons or added programs in September!

We are so happy that you’ve chosen to study at LAAPA.
We know you will do great things this year!
