Spring Concerts & Award Ceremonies are Coming!
Dear Students and Parents,
It’s time to begin preparing for our Spring Concerts! Our Spring Concerts and Award Ceremonies will be held June 16 at Victory Fellowship 5708 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA and June 17 at Loyola University - Roussel Hall - 6363 St. Charles Ave. for the River Ridge campus and June 23-24 at Fuhrmann Auditorium, 317 N. Jefferson St. in Covington for the Covington and Mandeville campuses. Due to our continued growth, we are expanding our Spring concerts and holding them over 2 days this year to ensure that we are not rushed and everyone has a great experience! Concert assignments will be announced in late May.
The deadline has now passed to sign up for dance students and the deadline to sign up for music students is 5/1/18. All music students are asked to complete and return the participation forms online.
Sign-up online today at:
RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR PARTICIPATION:
- All music students will be assigned one solo and may additionally participate in a duet.
- All instrumental and vocal students (voice, guitar, strings, wind, brass, etc.) will require accompanists. The accompanist fee is $35 and will provide students with 30 minutes of rehearsal time with the accompanist (or their instructor within the lesson) in addition to the performance on the day of the concert.
- Our goal is for all students to have an awesome experience and performance on stage, so we want to ensure that everyone is very well prepared! All music must be memorized! Students who are not fully prepared by June may be asked by their teachers to wait until our next concert.
- All dance students that are not performing in the concert should have already informed their teacher.
- All dance student costumes have now been ordered. Dance students must attend all lessons from now until the concert. If students miss more than three lessons from now until the concert they will not be able to perform. Rehearsal for dance students will be held the week before the recital. Dance students should come in full costume to their regular classes the week of June 9-15 (River Ridge) and June 16-22 (Mandeville). Finally, all dance students should arrive at Roussel Hall and Furhmann Auditorium as per the schedule which will be issued next month.
Many awards will be presented at each program based on the number of years students have been taking lessons at LAAPA. Every student who is performing will be recognized for his/her time of study and accomplishments. Students who compose and score their own music and/or who participated in LAAPAFEST will additionally be recognized in those award categories. Concert Tickets for General Admission may be pre-ordered when signing up online or at the Front Desk.
Two complimentary concert tickets (per family) are available for students and/or parents to pick up at the Front Desk.
We look forward to seeing everyone this June at our main event of the year!

Hot Club of Baton Rouge - Gypsy Jazz - April 29
On Sunday, April 29 - the Hot Club of Baton Rouge will be presenting a FREE CONCERT at the Mandeville School of Music & Dance's Elwood J Dufour Performance Hall - 5 PM.
Learn more about the group below:
“The Hot Club” was an establishment in Paris, France that wanted an orchestra of its own to showcase jazz, the new music coming out of America. In 1933, Django Reinhardt, the two-fingered guitar master, and Stephane Grappelli, the jazz violin virtuoso, formed the group, “Quintet du Hot Club de France” to answer this call. They started a musical “movement” which combined the folk music of the Roma Gypsies and the “hot jazz” of America, creating Jazz Manouche, or Gypsy Jazz. The Hot Club of Baton Rouge is a group of musicians who pay homage to this movement.
The instrumentation of The Hot Club of Baton Rouge is somewhat expanded from the original “Quintet du Hot Club de France.” While keeping with the traditional guitar choices, the unique “Petite Bouche” and “Grand Bouche” guitars, as well as the violin and upright bass, the group adds an accordion and soprano sax. Perhaps the biggest departure is the addition of a drum set! This expanded modern Gypsy ensemble is helping to bring the excitement and history of Jazz Manouche to an ever-expanding audience.
The Hot Club of Baton Rouge has headlined festivals such as the Twisted Oak music festival, TEDX, and the Ebb and Flow Music Festival. They are also proud ambassadors for the Jazz Foundation of America. They released a live album in 2017 entitled, “Live from TEDX LSU.” The performances feature standard Gypsy repertoire as well as original compositions by Patrick Bordelon. The group strives to interpret each work with a Gypsy flair and a Jazz sensibility.
We hope you enjoy The Hot Club of Baton Rouge!
River Ridge School of Music & Dance violin students, Izelh Merlo, Ariana Alvarez, and Teresa Cashen performed in a String Ensemble Recital Thursday March 22, 2018 in the LAAPA Performance Hall. They are pictured here with their instructor and River Ridge String Ensemble Director, Ms. Bridget Corrigan.
Mandeville School of Music & Dance student, Sarah Stone (pictured left), recently participated in a Hymn Festival at First Baptist Church in Slidell. She received a Superior rating, earning 59 out of 60 points! She takes piano lessons with Ms. Rebecca.
River Ridge School of Music & Dance student, Alana Ehrlich as a 3rd Grader was in the Elementary School Science Fair competition which was inclusive of all 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders. She placed first at her Elementary School and then competed at the St. Charles Parish District level (which I believe was 6 Elementary schools) and placed first there as well. Alana takes piano and voice lessons with Ms. Kadi.

You can now browse and purchase the beautiful Music and Dance artwork of local artist Michaela Howell in the LAAPA Store. Just goto http://store.laapa.com/art/
. She is currently offering 10% off, so be sure to take a look soon!
Local artist, Michaela Howell has graciously decorated our schools with her music and dance themed artwork (just one example of which is pictured right). All of these pieces may be purchased for your home or as a gift! Please inquire at the front desk.
With down home country humble beginnings Michaela has always been very resourceful. She cuts, sands, primes, paints, and in some cases stains her abstract versions of the wooden instruments, creating very hands-on works of art. This resourcefulness has “Played” out very nicely in her most current work. Though the recycling of varying musical instrument components including guitar strings, violin knobs, music sheets featuring the instrument showcased, Michaela portrays a ‘current’ sense of style combined with a very vivid color pallet, creating a symphony for the senses!
