Maximizing Communication with Your Teacher

New Orleans, Metairie, Mandeville Voice Lessons

Dear Parents and Students,

We hope you had a fantastic Mardi Gras break and we’re excited to get back into the groove! As we do so, I wanted to discuss our many options for parent-student-teacher communication which is critical to the progress and enjoyment of your lessons. Here, I’m mainly talking about lessons and classes for younger students because it’s easy for our adult students to speak directly with their instructors and work this out. However, I’d like everyone to know their options when it comes to communication!

Communication is extremely important to us here at LAAPA for your music lessons and dance classes. All students should be receiving weekly assignments, feedback, and progress updates either digitally via our LessonMate platform or within their LAAPA student notebooks. If for some reason you are not receiving communication weekly from your instructor via one of these methods, please let us know so we can bridge the gap! We realize that in today’s world schedules are extremely demanding especially with afterschool activities, so there can be a lot to keep up with. That’s why it’s so important to us to make communication as easy and accessible as possible so that you’ll always know what to expect at the next lesson and how your instructor feels about current progress!

Parents, please also know that we have an open door policy at LAAPA with music lessons - of course, our dance students can all be monitored on TV/viewing windows! Music parents are welcome to sit in on a lesson every now and then so that you can be more informed! For those parents that wait in our lobbies, our faculty are more than happy to give you an in-person summary and progress report of each lesson. Some faculty may do this automatically, some may need to be prompted (so don’t be afraid to ask)! So, please speak with your instructor about communication this week and work out a plan that works for everyone! It is up to the parents/students to choose which method(s) work best for them. Our teachers are happy to use any/all methods. Our most successful students and faculty use multiple methods with traditional written notes in the notebook, LessonMate for video examples, audio and PDF resources, free (legally shareable) sheet music, and occasional or regular verbal updates (either in person/phone). We really like to see as many resources used as possible to ensure maximum communication and progress.

***IMPORTANT*** If you need help getting your LessonMate account setup or are unsure of your password, just let us know and we’d be happy to help you. With LessonMate, each time your teacher posts a new lesson, you will receive an email prompting you to login and view the lesson. Please note that there is no actual lesson content in the email itself - you must login with your email address and password. If your teacher has not yet used LessonMate in your lessons and you’d like to try out the program, just ask and they would be happy to!

Playing Music with Dynamics - Lagniappe Lessons

In this edition of our Lagniappe Lesson series, Ms. Alexandra discusses the importance of playing music with dynamics. Dynamics are the equivalent of someone speaking with expression in their voice, in turn maintaining the interest of the audience. Performing without any dynamic variation can be unpleasant (especially with constant loud playing) or simply boring to your audience!

Important Dates:

March 10 - LAAPAFEST Covington
March 17 - LAAPAFEST Mandeville
March 17 - LAAPAFEST River Ridge
March 18 - Stage Presence Workshop with Katarina Boudreaux (FREE and open to Public)

Music & Dance Artwork

You can now browse and purchase the beautiful Music and Dance artwork of local artist Michaela Howell in the LAAPA Store. Just goto http://store.laapa.com/art/. She is currently offering 10% off, so be sure to take a look soon!
Local artist, Michaela Howell has graciously decorated our schools with her music and dance themed artwork (just one example of which is pictured right). All of these pieces may be purchased for your home or as a gift! Please inquire at the front desk.
With down home country humble beginnings Michaela has always been very resourceful. She cuts, sands, primes, paints, and in some cases stains her abstract versions of the wooden instruments, creating very hands-on works of art. This resourcefulness has “Played” out very nicely in her most current work. Though the recycling of varying musical instrument components including guitar strings, violin knobs, music sheets featuring the instrument showcased, Michaela portrays a ‘current’ sense of style combined with a very vivid color pallet, creating a symphony for the senses!

Student of the Month - Zachary Montz

New Orleans, Metairie, Mandeville Voice Lessons

Covington School of Music student, Zachary Montz, takes drum lessons and is also a part of the Rock Band here at LAAPA! We recently had a chance to speak with him and learn a little more about his lessons and interests!

What program(s) are you taking and who is/are your teacher(s)?
Percussion (Drums), Charles Ray
Pop Rock Band (Drums), Chris Talley

How long have you been taking lessons with us?
8 years

What is your favorite part of the lesson each week?
Getting to play the type of music that I love.

What do you enjoy practicing each week?
Learning to play more challenging songs, especially rock songs.

What are your other interests/hobbies?
Powerlifting, Basketball, Football, Cars and Video Games

What do you hope to accomplish with a background in music? What do you want to be when you grow up!?
I am joining the St. Paul’s Marching Wolves band next year, and then aspire to be on the drumline for a college marching band. After college, I would love to continue to play the drums professionally or as a hobby. Another profession I am interested in is being a pilot.

Chris and Kim (parents) What made you choose LAAPA?
We were looking for a music school with a good reputation, in a convenient location, with flexible practice hours, various instrument options and where Zachary could explore and develop his musical talent. We also loved the fact that he would be able to show his progress in performances throughout the year.

A HUGE welcome to our newest students who began lessons or added programs in late January-February!

We are so happy that you’ve chosen to study at LAAPA.
We know you will do great things this year!
