Spring Concerts & Award Ceremonies are Coming!

LAAPA February 2019 Newsletter for Music Lessons & Dance Classes in Mandeville, Covington, Northshore, New Orleans, River Ridge, Harahan
Dear Students and Parents,

It’s time to begin preparing for our Spring Concerts! Our Spring Concerts and Award Ceremonies will be held June 29-30 at St. Martin’s Solomon Theatre, 225 Green Acres Rd in Metairie for the River Ridge campus and June 22-23 at Fuhrmann Auditorium, 317 N. Jefferson St. in Covington for the Covington and Mandeville campuses. Due to our continued growth, we are expanding our Spring concerts and holding them over 2 days this year to ensure that we are not rushed and everyone has a great experience! Concert assignments will be announced in late May.

The deadline has now passed to sign up for dance students and the deadline to sign up for music students is 5/1/19. All music students are asked to complete and return the participation forms online.

Sign-up online today at:

- All music students will be assigned one solo and may additionally participate in a duet.
- All instrumental and vocal students (voice, guitar, strings, wind, brass, etc.) will require accompanists. The accompanist fee is $35 and will provide students with 30 minutes of rehearsal time with the accompanist (or their instructor within the lesson) in addition to the performance on the day of the concert.
- Our goal is for all students to have an awesome experience and performance on stage, so we want to ensure that everyone is very well prepared! All music must be memorized! Students who are not fully prepared by June may be asked by their teachers to wait until our next concert.
- All dance students that are not performing in the concert should have already informed their teacher.
- All dance student costumes have now been ordered. Dance students must attend all lessons from now until the concert. If students miss more than three lessons from now until the concert they will not be able to perform. Rehearsal for dance students will be held the week before the recital. Dance students should come in full costume to their regular classes the week of June 17-21 (Mandeville) and June 24-28 (River Ridge). Finally, all dance students should arrive at St. Martin’s Solomon Theatre and Fuhrmann Auditorium as per the schedule which will be issued next month.

Many awards will be presented at each program based on the number of years students have been taking lessons at LAAPA. Every student who is performing will be recognized for his/her time of study and accomplishments. Students who compose and score their own music and/or who participated in LAAPAFEST will additionally be recognized in those award categories.

Concert Tickets for General Admission are now available online at:

Two complimentary concert tickets (per family) will be emailed to the email address used at registration. The email will come directly from Eventbrite. If you have any questions, please stop by the Front Desk. We look forward to seeing everyone this June at our main event of the year!

New Artwork by Michaela Howell

We are very fortunate to work with local artist Michaela Howell. Many of her paintings and art are on display at all three of our school campuses!

Michaela recently brought in new artwork that can be viewed at both of our Northshore campuses. The beautiful piece above is available for purchase at our Covington location for $425.

Interested in purchasing art from Michaela? Inquire at the front desk!

With down home country humble beginnings Michaela has always been very resourceful. She cuts, sands, primes, paints, and in some cases stains her abstract versions of the wooden instruments, creating very hands-on works of art. This resourcefulness has “Played” out very nicely in her most current work. Though the recycling of varying musical instrument components including guitar strings, violin knobs, music sheets featuring the instrument showcased, Michaela portrays a ‘current’ sense of style combined with a very vivid color pallet, creating a symphony for the senses!

Student of the Month - Arivan Subramanian

New Orleans, Metairie, Mandeville Voice Lessons

River Ridge School of Music & Dance student, Arivan Subramanian, takes piano lessons here at LAAPA! We recently had a chance to speak with him and learn a little more about his lessons and interests!

How long have you been taking lessons at LAAPA?
“It’s been almost 2 years that I have been taking lessons. I started in June of 2017.”

What are some of your interests/hobbies outside of music?
“I enjoy doing art, playing Legos, and building motorized things.”

What style of music do you love to play the most?
“I love all piano music! My favorite songs to play are ‘Dragon Hunt’ (my LAAPAFEST piece), ‘Captain Hook,’ and ‘Spanish Caballero,’ which I learned to play for my Spanish teacher at school.”

Who is your favorite musician/band/artist?
“My favorite musician is Louis Armstrong.”

What do you want to be when you grow up?
“I would like to be a volcanologist, a piano composer, or the head of a car manufacturing company.”

What is your favorite thing about taking lessons?
“I get to practice my favorite songs in class! I also like that my instructor, Ms. Denise, says it’s okay to make mistakes.”

(Dad) What made you choose LAAPA?
“I was looking for a premier music school, as I always wanted to learn to play an instrument, but was never trained. I want my children to learn the classics and the technique. LAAPA was my top choice.”

A HUGE welcome to our newest students who began lessons or added programs in March!

We are so happy that you’ve chosen to study at LAAPA.
We know you will do great things this year!
