Perhaps you have always wanted to learn to dance but never had the time until now. Perhaps you took dance classes years ago and have been meaning to start again, or you are preparing for upcoming auditions and want some extra guidance. You may even have a specific goal in mind, like performing a routine at a wedding. Whatever brings you in, no prior dance experience is required.
At LAAPA, many adult students study with us each week at our campuses in Mandeville, Covington, and River Ridge. Your dance instructor will make you feel right at home! We are happy to teach adult students at every level, from brand new beginners to advanced, and both private dance lessons and group classes are provided in a fun, low pressure environment.
Adults may choose to study in any of our dance programs, as it truly is never too late to start! Participation in our recitals is always optional (as it is for all of our students).
Younger students are usually unsure of their goals when joining a dance class. One of the reasons that our faculty enjoy working with adult students is because they usually know exactly why they've decided to join and exactly what they're wanting to work towards! This level of clarity and motivation excites all of us here at LAAPA and makes a substantial difference in terms of you receiving fulfilling lessons. Our goal with our adult students is to make each lesson or class a perfect combination of each student's wants and needs.
Adults may choose to participate in any of the following adult classes: Adult Ballet, Adult Tap, Adult Hip-Hop, Adult Contemporary/Modern, and private dance lessons.
Adult classes are leveled so that every dancer works at the right pace. Brand new beginners start with the fundamentals of their chosen style, while returning dancers are placed according to their background and goals. If you are an older beginner preparing for an upper level class, adding a weekly private lesson is a great way to build skills quickly. To see current days and times, view our adult dance class schedule.
Adult dance classes are available at all three LAAPA campuses. You can study at our schools in Mandeville and Covington on the Northshore, or at our River Ridge campus, convenient to Harahan, Metairie, and the greater New Orleans area.
As adults, we have so many demands on our time with family, work, volunteering, and friends. Then comes technology - which was invented to save us time, however we usually use it to cram in more work instead of enjoying the extra free time! Dance classes allow us the opportunity to unwind, stretch your body, and get some exercise while learning something new.
Yes! We've helped bring the joy of dance to many adult beginners over the years. With practice and dedication, anything is possible!
Though strongly encouraged, our dance recitals are completely optional for all of our students, and you'll never need to set a foot on a stage if you don't want to! We realize that every student has a variety of goals in mind and some students just want to learn to dance for their own enjoyment while others can't wait to jump into the spotlight!
Do I need dance experience to take adult classes?
No experience is necessary. Many of our adult students begin as brand new beginners, and our faculty love working with first-time dancers. You will always be placed at the level that fits you best.
Which dance style is best for adult beginners?
Adult Ballet and Adult Tap are popular starting points for beginners, while Adult Hip-Hop and Adult Contemporary/Modern offer a higher energy workout. If you are unsure where to begin, a private lesson is a great way to sample a style before joining a group class.
What should I wear to my first adult dance class?
Comfortable clothing that you can move in is all you need to get started. Once you enroll, your instructor will review our simple class dress code with you.
How much time do adult dance classes require each week?
Most adult students attend one weekly group class. If your schedule is tight or you want to progress faster, private lessons offer flexible scheduling and one on one instruction.
